Pathology & Microbiology

Pathology is a medical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis of disease based on the laboratory analysis of various body fluids such as blood and urine etc., and tissue analysis. Microbiology deals with variety of microbes, including bacteria, fungi and viruses, that affect our health.

The department of Pathology and Microbiology of Northern Railway Central Hospital is well equipped with state of the art equipments of latest technology. It forms integral and important support service area of the hospital. It is a full-fledged department with various sections namely Hematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Histopathology, Cytology, Immunology, Serology, Clinical Pathology, Blood Bank & Emergency Lab Services.

In the present era of “EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE”, the department provides the evidence for screening, correct diagnosis, therapeutic decision making, early initiation of appropriate definitive treatment, and prognostic indication.

The department caters to the diagnostic needs all OPD and Indoor patients across all specialties hailing from Delhi NCR, other divisions of Northern Railway, even other neighboring and distant zones.

With an average daily footfall of over 250 patients in Pathology OPD alone, and also indoor patients, the department performed 13,84,736 tests in last one year that is 4,851 tests in a day in a mix of tests done manually, on semi-automated and automated systems as per the standard reference protocols. 

 

FUNCTIONS: 

The department provides following services:

  • Clinical laboratory services to all OPD & indoor patients attending Central hospital which includes patients from Delhi NCR, different Divisions as well as neighboring Zones.

  • Specimen collection facility from health units under jurisdiction of Central Hospital.

  • Round the clock emergency lab services.

  • Round the clock blood bank services.

  • Organization of Voluntary blood donation camps.

  • Facility for in- house testing of all routine and a variety of special tests.

  • Availability of state of the art equipments of latest technique, technology with continuous upgradation and development in this respect.

  • Availability of laboratory results in reasonable time.

  • STAT reporting of urgent samples.

  • We have well developed Quality management system, both Internal Quality management system as well as successful & continuous participation in various External Quality Assurance Programs for more than 15 years with AIIMS, CMC Vellore, IAMM EQAS and international Quality assurance programs organized by Randox and Bio-Rad Laboratories with excellent results. We also do periodic inter-laboratory variation comparison & assessment.   

  • Investigations of candidates & employees during initial recruitment, periodic medical examination & medical board.

  • Investigations of Railway beneficiaries attending health check up camps.

  • Annual Health Checkup of employees as part of APAR.

  • Department has been accredited by National Board of Examinations for DNB training in Pathology for last 13 years and also provides training for basic sciences to DNB trainees of other specialities.

  • Department is conducting Formative assessment tests (FAT) for DNB Pathology candidates of Other Government and corporate hospitals.

  • In-service training to all medical & paramedical staff. Regular training to staff under Saksham Programme.

  • Training to Interns, DMLT Trainees, Graduates and Postgraduate students of Microbiology & Biotechnology from other reputed colleges and universities for summer training programs.

  • The department provides backbone support services to the hospital for various health programmes viz. National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (Sentinel Surveillance Centre), National AIDS Control program, Revised National Tuberculosis program, Blood Safety, Cancer Screening etc.

  • Have empanelled NABL Accredited reputed Private Diagnostic centres for providing lab investigation services for tests that are not available in-house and are essential for diagnosis and management of the patients.

FUTURE PLANS:

  • To have Counselors for HIV/AIDS & Blood Bank.

  • Availability of Phlebotomists for daily sample collection of OPD cases, indoor cases and all health units under jurisdiction of NRCH.

  • HMIS, LMIS and uploading of reports online and report sent through SMS, E- mail etc.

  • Introduction of new tests/parameters as per the availability & demand- Start PCR lab

  • Upgradation of different sections with automation and installation of new equipments of latest techniques and technologies.  

  • Training of medical & paramedical laboratory staff in latest techniques & technologies.

  • Starting new courses in the department namely, DNB (Microbiology) & Diploma in Pathology & Bacteriology (DPB).  

CHALLENGES:

The department is spread over three different floors in three different blocks -

  1. Ground Floor-

      • OPD collection room, Clinical pathology, Serology & Emergency lab,

      • Lab stores in Porta Cabin

  2. 2nd floor - Blood Bank in rear wing and

  3. 3rd Floor - Main laboratory in New Block.

Thus, supervision, organization and management pose challenges.
